Starting to feel just a tad bit worn out by work. Just realised it today because work seems to be affecting my mood quite a little bit. The thought of having to work many days before the reward of another off day comes really turns me off quite a bit, to the extent of me feeling anxious about it. I think I'm exaggerating it but such a feeling will probably only get worse. How do working people manage to continue for 30-odd years? I'm complaining now but I guess if I were to be bent on doing something I would be able to as well. Except that my job has to be something I really enjoy doing and pays enough without having me fast for a few meals to get by. Working gave me a glimpse of the real world's every day challenges, especially with regards to handling annoying superiors and being tasked to perform certain tasks which are repetitive and feel more like punishment for being an eyesore rather than actual work to be done. That came as a surprise though; I thought customers were the ones hard to handle but nope I've had a lot of fun with them. The sad part is the fun comes all the time from customers because they're not the ones we meet every day, hence the less chance we have to fall out with them. Seems to me like the more you interact with someone, the more likely it is for that someone to get on our nerves. Suddenly everything seems so ugly yet real, so evasive yet confrontational. At times I even feel like quitting, but there seems to be even more reason for me to stay on.Been thinking about stuff like family and all that and just thinking if I've really set my priorities right, or if my priorities are in line with my family members', or if all of that mattered at all. Just kidding of course they're all important. But just how much have I been affecting family dynamics in the midst of being selfish? In love and relationships, I feel that I'm always the receiving party and that I haven't been putting much thought into how to give back, no matter how deep a sense of gratitude I actually feel deep within me. I feel so... selfish, oftentimes forgetting the fact that everyone needs to feel that reciprocity and acknowledgement. Juggling work and play has never been a problem for me, but when it comes to juggling my priorities I can't seem to decide which should come first and always let my heart rule my head. Trust me it's annoying. I can't come to terms with myself. Have I ever thought that the real problem lies within myself and not any other individual? Have I been giving you enough personal space and time? Have I been the cause of a failed relationship and refused to acknowledge my fault? Have I been saying things that hurt you, yet still pretend to be ignorant when my heart was actually bleeding? Did I show you that I got angry yet deny it shortly after and dismiss it off lightly as a "mood swing" without verbalising my true thoughts and emotions? Did I crave too much attention that I don't deserve? Have I gone overboard by wanting too much. This stupid crazy selfish monster somehow was unleashed quite some time ago, yet I haven't managed to tame it and it gets worse. When can I ever stop feeling this way? I think I need to learn how to let go. Am I freaking childish? Hahaha. All that talk about maturity, growing up and finally thinking that I'm an adult... that picture doesn't exist anymore? I feel so child-like, incessantly craving attention and proximity, at times even with unreasonable requests. I feel so petty and narrow-minded, even when I know I might be losing out on someone I hold on to dearly if I continue being so idiotic. Not only that. I don't even feel responsible enough to be called an adult. An aimless kid not knowing what she wants and how to get there? Still waiting for decisions to be made by others rather than by herself. Irresponsible and so wilful. Late night thoughts/introspection are always so precious and elusive. When day comes all of that worry and disappointment gets brought away with the moon. Work has been pretty fulfilling up till now. Not quite the working experience itself but it really tested my interaction skills with others and showed me how important it is to forge healthy relationships with my colleagues. I've had a really fun time and the time at work just passes pretty quickly when I have the right company. It feels too good and too right to be a working place, devoid of all the mind-boggling politics which breeds unhappiness. I really hope I can find a job that requires more human interaction and is more challenging than this one. Well for now, apart from the pay and the unfair retail working hours whereby the retail executive schedules the roster to suit her own needs, I'm pretty cool with what I have now.
Today up till now was tiring. Had mahjong session with H6 until 4am and now I'm struggling to keep myself steady enough for GECO later at night. Woke up early to send Teng off for enlistment today. Although it doesn't directly affect me, I still felt diverse forms of weird emotions which are neither strong nor faint. Maybe it was the genuine lack of sleep. It suddenly hit me that it's gonna be a new chapter of their lives but ours remain the same minus all the company and fun times together. It's technically not that bad, but the sense of loss was still overpowering. I suddenly felt appreciative of everything that we shared in common - memories, thoughts, emotions, food, laughter, company, pure fun - throughout the past six years. We've really come a long way and it's rare how our friendship still stays unwavered despite so many changes. It was gratitude, anxiety, pride, reluctance all mashed up in their mildest forms which made me feel really sick and confused.
Had mini conversations with his mum and finally saw how she was like as a woman. I didn't expect myself not to pay enough attention to the important people around him. It brought me to reconsider how deep this friendship is and whether it was at all superficial, or that knowing less could make a friendship more innocent and unsophisticated by reducing tiring complications and undesirable quarrels. I felt her worry, her reluctance, her confidence, her shrewdness, and saw how she was a strong person unafraid to express her staunch opinions to anyone. Gave me an eye-opener to many things I haven't seen from her perspective. Encouraged me to pursue what I intend to, despite obstacles that stand in your way. Taught me not to follow what people think is right for you but what you think defines you. Reminded me to spend energy and vitality to go for things that I should do while I'm still youthful. I couldn't comprehend how such an uneventful day could bring so much thought but whenever I recall the look in her eyes, I recall a deep longing and the invisible heavy burden that she's been carrying, staring into space in a distance. Something I would never forget.
And for the new recruits? I couldn't care less with all the chaos and loud family gatherings. Instead I took notice of the few silent individuals obviously bogged down by a truckload of mentally burdensome thoughts. The insecurity of the future was clearly reflected in their eyes. How can I come out of this alive? I've heard so much, could there be worse? Will I really transform from a dependent wilful boy into a youthful man with conviction and independence? If I have dreams that I want to pursue in the army, can I rise to the occasion and prove my worth? How badly will I miss my loved ones? What do I want myself to become at the end of two years? So many thoughts yet so little room for them.
Which reminds me when I had a talk with Keith yesterday about my moral code. Have I been echoing after someone else's personality? Have I been wanting to be the "ideal" model character and trying too hard to achieve that? What really are some of the values I hold on dearly to?
I haven't been putting much thought into myself even though I seem to spend so much time evaluating others. But I'm beginning to want to improve myself to be a better person. Being more (financially) independent, less vulnerable, have greater aspirations, think out of the box, being more flexible and open to new ideas and most of all, not be bounded by the definitions of what is right and what is wrong.
Well... Youth is an age to discover and enjoy after all, and my youth shall begin today.
